Milan Five Boutique “Milanese style” Hotels

More than hotels, these unique places allow you to live a true Milanese lifestyle experience, either in a traditional “casa di ringhiera”, with the view of the Gallery, in a gentlemen’s club or in one of the three rooms at Sozzani’s.

Big hotels have their own charm and offer international standards and excellent service. Milan has its Four Seasons, Hilton Hotels, Leading Hotels of the World and Relais & Châteaux establishments. Since 2015, it has also had the first Mandarin Oriental in Italy.

But boutique hotels are another thing, unique places, where you can feel a bit at home and a little surprised by the design, architectural and stylistic choices of their creators.

Here are five addresses in Milan with a profound Milanese soul.

Old Milan Style

Maison Borella 4 * provides a true Milanese experience: a tenement (typical public housing of the city, with long balconies) overlooking the Naviglio Grande, the centre of the city nightlife. Every evening, the pedestrian area is filled with people enjoying the myriad of bars and restaurants. Eclectic design, nice breakfast buffet.

Design by Patricia Urquiola

Room Mate Giulia is a boutique hotel located near the Duomo, part of the Room Mate Hotels Group. It features 85 rooms in an early 20th century building, decorated with contemporary colours and furnishings. For those who love to experience the lobby, because here it will make you feel at home.

For true gentlemen

Gloomy, welcoming, perfect for winter, furnished with vintage hat boxes and sports trophies from the 18th century to the fifties – all for sale. The Yard is more than a hotel, it is like a men’s club, all tartan and skateboard (not bikes) for guests. They have junior suites, suites, but also maisons and maisonettes designed for families. If you want a drink, you don’t have to go far, just go down to the The Doping Club bar (with smoking lounge).

Only 3 rooms

The Hotel 3 Rooms, part of 10 Corso Como area, was opened in 1990 by Carla Sozzani, legendary Editor of Vogue Italia. There are only 3 rooms, featuring design interiors, private access to the courtyard space. The Garden Café and an art gallery as a lobby make for a unique experience.

For fashion addicts

A place visited by travellers, designers and catwalk regulars: this is how the clients of the Senato Hotel – Best Urban Hotel 2016 according to Wallpaper magazine – would describe themselves. Transformed from a private house into a hotel, it retains the charm of upper middle class homes, renovated in a sober way. On the ground floor, the Senato Caffè offers a second chance for a true Milanese lifestyle experience.

Excelsior Hotel Gallia The most luxurious and famous hotel in Milan, next to the Central railway station. Recently renovated.
Hotel Principe di Savoia Historic hotel, loved by celebrities and politicians, it is the other top address in the city.
