Milan is a city where everyone is in a hurry, but going for a run has become a real craze, shared by women and men of all ages. Running in the park often isn't enough, and to challenge themselves not to miss the workout, many choose to join an organized run or marathon – often just fun, non-competitive races.
In the parks and along the bike paths, urban locations in the city centre are very popular. These include Parco Sempione, Indro Montanelli Public Gardens at Porta Venezia, up and down Monte Stella near San Siro, around the Idroscalo, the “sea of Milan” and along the Naviglio Martesana, which may be better suited for marathon runners because of its 38 km in length.
For over 40 years, in March, thousands of people flock to the streets for Italy’s most famous amateur race, the Stramilano. The options are always a 21K half-marathon, or a 10K or 5K run – depending on your physical fitness – and takes place around the city centre on a Sunday, with roads closed to traffic for the occasion. The important thing is not winning but taking part; Some people come for a walk with the dog, bring strollers, stay behind runners and true athletes who compete in this race which has involved, since being founded in 1972, more than a million and a half people. It is not the New York City Marathon, but well worth it! The next is on April 25, 2018.
A 42K course for individual runners or as a relay race with at least four runners. Anything goes, especially because it is done for a good cause, in fact, each participant signs up through a non-profit association that donates the fee. Now in its 18th edition, the appointment promoted by Emporio Armani is back: the next race will be on April 8, 2018. Registration is open as of October 2017.
Runners begin at 5.30 a.m., on time, when there is little traffic and you can run in the heart of the city. The project, begun in Modena, has now spread to several cities in Italy, the United Kingdom and United States, and promotes a healthy lifestyle. Having a limited number of scheduled morning runs, you can register at www.run530.com.
The race sponsored by Radio Deejay, one of the most popular in Italy, is a real 5K or 10K long party. It is not a competitive race and at the finish lines, you can eat, listen to music and have fun. The last edition was attended by more than 30,000 people. It is held in October.
The most colourful “fun race” in the world goes through Milan. You begin dressed in white, and end up rainbow-coloured, dancing in front of the stage after the finish line. It is held in June.
