Vienna Best gourmet tables in town

Austria’s capital prides itself on a strong culinary tradition. And while most of the time the Viennese prefer a more casual dining experience, sometimes a Schnitzel and a pint of lager just won’t cut it.

The good news is that even in Vienna’s top-notch restaurants the bill won’t set your bank account to Red Alert as it would do at a similar place in New York or Paris – the Viennese are just not used to or willing to spend a month’s salary on dinner.

Viennese cuisine has evolved dramatically over the past decade and organic and locally produced ingredients are valued, both on Austrian menus and in supermarkets. Now next to the very established places, there are some new contestants in the field of high-end dining, so whether you are looking for a hip experience with a view or prefer a more traditional setting, the following recommendations should help you choose some of the best tables in town.

“Viennese are just not used to spending a month’s salary on a dinner.”

Overlooking the entire city, with a 360-degree view and enjoying haute cuisine paired with yummy cocktails sounds like a good way to spend an evening? Le Loft offers just that, and not only for guests staying at the Sofitel skyscraper it’s built on top of. The menu offers Austrian dishes fused with Asian ingredients, sometimes taking this a bit too far, but still, it numbers among the top destinations in town.

Boasting two Michelin stars and four Gault-Millau toques, Steirereck has been Vienna’s highest-rated restaurant for ages, has placed 10th on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list in 2017 and will probably stay on top for many years to come. This year, Chef Heinz Reitbauer’s focus lies on contemporary Austrian cuisine that relies on the use of local products. The setting – right inside Vienna’s beautiful Stadtpark – makes it a safe bet for everyone looking for an outstanding dining experience.

Enjoying dinner on a boat is always fun and eating out at Motto am Fluss will bring you as close to that as is possible in Vienna without any chance of getting sea sick. The restaurant provides an all-around five-star experience, without the frills. From the fantastic staff that will do everything to make your meal as pleasant as possible to the food that is fresh, innovative and simply to die for. It will make you fall in love with Austrian cuisine all over again.

If dining like an emperor is on your to-do list, the terrace at DO & CO in the Albertina is the place to go. Overlooking the Opera House and the Burggarten provides a view that cannot be beaten and the food is a select mix between Austrian and international cuisine. Pro tip from the menu: skip your next visit to the U.K., Fish ‘n’ Chips have never tasted as good as their version.

Dinner time Mind that the local dinner time is traditionally 7 p.m. for dinner, so don't be late.
